Industrial Pollution in Islamabad

Green Press's field investigation team prepared a report on the hazardous substances emitted by pollutant factories in Industrial Area of lslamabad and raised the issue in media.

Based upon Green Press's coverage a resident of Islamabad Industrial area embarked on Public Interest Litigation in the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Apex court in 1998 directed the Capital Development Authority to either change the trade of these pollutant industries or shift them away from residential area.

  • Launched monthly newsletter," Green News".
  • Initiated a series of lectures," Development Forum" on environmental and sustainable development themes.
  • Campaigned to solicit public support for country's first-ever Green operation in Bani Gala (an illegal habitat in Margalla Hills National Park, polluting Rawal Lake, which supplies drinking water to 1.5 million people in Rawalpindi / lslamabad). The members of Green Press followed the litigation between the Capital Development Authority and the residents of Bani Gala and exposed the weaknesses of country's legal system, which at the end of day favoured a few powerful residents of the elite locality and did not bother to preserve drinking water reservoir.
  • Monitored a pilot project to check vehicular emissions on Murree Road, Rawalpindi in collaboration with the Federal Environment Protection Agency.
  • President Green Press, Mr. Zafarullah Khan joined the US based Global Response International Advisory Board (GRIAB) as a representative from Asia for three years term (1992-1995).
